  Firstly - The Ark Of The Covenant is not the ark built by Noah to save his family and two of every kind of animal during Noah's flood.  This Ark is essentially a 'box' with extravagant decorations.  It was the earthly representation of the heavenly Ark, according to God.  (It is clearly described in the Bible, in Exodus.)  This was the holy shrine for God himself to appear above, inside the tabernacle of the Israelites during the Old Testament times.  In the 80's film "Raiders of the Lost Ark", we see Indy himself entangled in the mystery.  Unfortunately this film is all Hollywood, and not truthful at all.  However - at the end when the Ark is opened, they use special effects to demonstrate what happens to men who open it, and it's not a pretty sight.  This was based on truth - if you read back in Exodus you see clear evidence that this Ark was so holy that it was in the deepest part of the tabernacle, in a tent that only the high priest was allowed to enter once a year.  Looking upon it when the Lord was above it meant death, and one man died by leaning over and steadying it with his hand when the cart it was on wobbled during transit.  (They had been instructed to carry it a different way, not by cart.)  So as you can see, this isn't just some priceless historical artifact, it's also something incredibly holy and sacred.  The ground it lies under is politically one of the hottest potatoes around, and thus the fact that it is there is being with-held from the public.  It is feared warring will accompany its exposure, and death isn't unrelated to anyone trying to tell more than government allow.
